David Weir has probably faced a better level of competition than, say, Lewis Hamilton

I would hope that Sophie Kamlish gets a look-in from the para-athletes.

One factor in Murray winning in 2015 was that the Davis Cup final was only a few days before the award was voted for, I believe the BBC added Murray and Tyson Fury as last-minute additions to the previously compiled (but not announced) shortlist.

How about Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, winning Olympic gold at 21 and the WC the following year

I went to 3 sessions after not being able to go in 2012, and was pleasantly surprised by the stadium, the seats were comfortable and ample legroom for me, sight lines were excellent and the range of food available was perfectly acceptable, even if some of the prices were over the top even for this type of event (£9.20 for a pie anyone?). Getting…[Read more]

Medal target of 6-8 wasn’t it? Box sort of ticked in the end (plus 5 fourth places too)

McColgan misses a pb by a few hundredths, and breaking 15′ for the first time by less than half a second

Where was Kerley ranked in the US this time last year? You can’t suddenly decide to take a redshirt halfway through the season, it has to be done before your first competitive appearance (I believe in some sports even before the first training session) of the season.

Why would Texas A&M let him do that anyway? I’m sure he’s on a pretty nice…[Read more]

Really good point on the BBC just now, that after 11 events, athletes from 10 different countries have won gold medals (and 20 countries have won some kind of medal). That is very healthy in my book.

Ski jumpers rely on their coaches to identify the correct time to go when the wind is correct, so I’m not surprised someone in the PV does the same sort of thing.

Johnson-Thompson is probably going to end up 4th or 5th in the world at Heptathlon. Is there any individual event where it would be likely that she would finish better than that?

    Good prediction!

Jess Martin has now announced her retirement, her race in the 10,000m last night being her (disappointing) swansong.

Johnson-Thompson is so slow across the shot circle, especially compared to the similarly built Thiam.

One rather obvious name to add to the women’s list would be Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Individual situations need to be taken on their own merits too – Steve Backley was one of our greatest ever throwers but never won a global title to the existence of Jan Železný.

A couple of points about Larkim’s table above

    * There were 16 on the short list this time around rather than 10-12 in other years
    * Add 1/2 of Kadeena Cox’s total to the athletics percentage
    * Hannah Cockroft was also nominated in 2013, and David Weir in 2012. Very much “T&F Nominees”

Why add Liddell but not say Linford Christie?
