Is the stadium in Split particularly conducive to discus throwing? She’s thrown 70m+ in 7 competitions in her career and 4 of them have happened in her season opener in Split.

I’ve found a Youtube clip. It certainly wasn’t done in the Poljud Stadium used for the 1990 Europeans!
In general, non-stadium venues tend to be more likely to have favourable wind conditions for discus. I think the discus is actually the only men’s track and field event where a World Record has never been set at an Olympics.

Zharnel Hughes has posted on Twitter that he’s run 10.12 into a 1.6 headwind! Not sure where but that’s an excellent start!

Harry Hughes has added a metre to his spear PB with 76.69 at the European Throwing Cup, which is further than any Brit threw last year. He won’t be 20 until late September so that’s pretty encouraging.

Rachel Wallader was only 6cm short of her (non downhill) PB with 17.47. Sophie McKinna also went over 17.

Manyonga jumped 8.62 to back up his 8.46 from a few weeks ago. I fear Rutherfords’s got his work cut out this year as Lawson will likely improve too

I agree the LJ is about to move on and I think Rutherford will do well to get a bronze. Manyonga’s jump was at altitude but even so – impressive!

Matti Mortimore has thrown a new PB of 77.15 to jump above Hughes at the top of the early spear rankings. Not earth shattering but they’re both improving year on year, which is all you can ask.

JJJ, Hughes’ 10.12 was run in Kingston, Jamaica but is shown as NWI in the IAAF rankings which I think means that there was no wind information. Still a good run, but maybe now with a bit of uncertainty as to how good.

Aargh! My 2017 Distance Running Thread has disappeared from the board!!

New half marathon WR for Joyciline Jepkosgei (64:52) in Prague and 3 World Bests for her en-route!

It’s all detailed in the missing thread (missing from the list but still exists).

2 British ladies under the 10,000 WCh standard at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. Eilsih McColgan, 3rd in 32:10.56 on her 10k track debut and in 4th, Charlotte Taylor (Nene Valley/San Francisco Uni; 10th in NCAA XC) in 32:11.80 (a 73 second PB!)

The race was won by 20yo Anna Rohrer (3rd in NCAA XC) in 31:58.99 on her 10k debut.

I’ve dl’d the race from Flotrack so will watch it later to see if I can discern if Eilish was “all out” or not. I expected quite a bit faster, TBH.

Yeah, just seen that. And also this astonishing incident from the same meeting, featuring boyfriend Michael Rimmer (2nd at the time) in Section 1 of the 1500:

I see the IAAF are calling them World Records not World Bests. I called them World Bests in my disappeared Distance thread* because I thought only championship events (the half marathon has its World Championship) and the Mile & 3000m have world records? Anything else, e.g., 300m, 2000m and intermediate distances on the road, are World Bests, aren’t they?

A very minor point, I know. :mail:

    * I emailed Jessica W about the missing thread and she said she’d speak to the web developer.
