If you want to see a women’s hurdles race featuring 6 or 7 Americans, or a steeplechase with 9 Kenyans, just watch the Diamond League. I happen to find it tedious. For me, getting rid of the 3 per nation rule would be a complete turn-off. The audience for athletics would wither completely if casual viewers weren’t able to cheer on their nations’ athletes. There are plenty of other competitions for the purists to watch.
The whole point of the IAAF’s new system is to control the numbers of entrants in case they set the standard too low in any particular year and get too many qualifiers. Therefore the standards are now deliberately set too high. Griping about athletes going who haven’t reached the artificially inflated standard is therefore pointless.
