A round-up of European Veterans’ Championships action in Turkey

Great Britain’s masters athletes rounded off their European track and field championships campaign in Izmir with 12 wins in the final day’s relays.

This helped the team to maintain a strong overall second place in the European Veterans’ Championships medal table behind the all-conquering Germans.

Despite a bout of sickness that spread among the competitors, performances were not unduly affected but one or two athletes did have to miss races.

This did not stop M60 Steve Peters, pictured, taking five sprint golds, including in the relays, and there were also seven wins in the W65 group.

Sprinter Moira West took four wins as did Angela Copson.

In the W55 group Averil McClelland picked up four as did Carol Filer, with again the relays playing a part.

The total Great Britain medal haul was 158 with 67 gold, 53 silver and 38 bronze, but the German team nearly doubled that with a total of 297 medals, 121 of those gold.
