Interview with Lynsey Sharp following the presentation of her 2012 European Championships 800m gold medal in Glasgow
Lynsey Sharp has said that finally receiving her European gold medal at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match on Saturday has given her something positive to build on in the year ahead.
The Edinburgh AC athlete was last year promoted from the silver to gold medal position in the 800m at the 2012 European Championships after Russian athlete Yelena Arzhakova was banned for two years for a doping offence.
She was presented with her medal by her father Cameron, a European 200m silver medallist and former 4x100m Commonwealth champion.
“It’s amazing to finally get the medal and to draw a line under it and be able to say that I’m officially the European champion now, now I’ve got the medal in my hands,” said Sharp.
As a result of Arzhakova’s ban, Sharp was also upgraded from bronze to silver in the 800m at the 2011 European Under-23 Championships
You can hear more from Sharp in the Scottish Athletics video below, where she talks about her struggles with injury in 2013 and looks ahead to a summer season including a Commonwealth Games on home soil.
