Bolt, Farah, Fraser-Pryce

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has revealed the names of 20 athletes shortlisted for the 2013 World Athlete of the Year award.

A total of 10 male and 10 female athletes are in contention for the honour, with Mo Farah, Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Valerie Adams among those nominated.

Finalists will be decided by way of an email poll involving the ‘World Athletics Family’ which includes IAAF and International Athletic Foundation (IAF) council and staff members, national federations, meeting directors and press. The poll, opening on Tuesday, will end Sunday October 27.

At the end of that voting process, three male and three female finalists will be announced, with the winners, selected by the council of the IAF, named at the IAAF World Athletics Gala in Monaco on November 16.

World 5000m and 10,000m champion Farah, who also broke the European 1500m record in July, and double world sprint champion Fraser-Pryce are sure to be among the favourites, as is triple world champion Bolt who won last year’s award along with Allyson Felix. Wilson Kipsang also has a place on the shortlist following his world record-breaking performance at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.
