Training this Christmas?

Hoping to train this Christmas day? Then you won’t be alone. Stars of athletics share their festive training plans

Mo Farah is just one athlete that has voiced plans to train on Christmas day, with the hope of getting one, or two, up on his rivals.

“Of course I’ll be running (on Christmas Day)!” the double Olympic champion told the Radio Times recently. “I’m going to run twice, because my rivals will probably only run once, so I’ll have done more than anyone else.”

Seems he’s taken a leaf out of Daley Thompson’s book, with the double Olympic decathlon champion known for wanting to see off his opponents by putting in a double training session on the big day: “Train twice on Christmas day. Your competitors may only train once…”

So who is, and who isn’t, set to join Farah in some festive training this year? We took to Twitter and asked some of GB’s track and field stars to find out.

Scott Overall @scottoverall

I will be running, probably just an easy hour! Nothing exciting. I’m just back building up after the Fukuoka Marathon and then heading to Kenya in January.

Adam Gemili @Adam_Gemili
Haha no, I get Christmas Day and Boxing Day off so won’t be training.

Laura Weightman @LauraWeightman
Christmas day for me will be spent with my family at home in Northumberland. I will spend the early part of the morning opening presents and will then train late morning before Christmas dinner followed by an afternoon of Christmas films and chocolate! There is something I love about running on Christmas Day.

Jack Green @jackpgreen
I won’t be training Christmas day. Champions aren’t made in a day, I’m enjoying my time off!

Tom Farrell @farrell_osu
Yes I will be training Christmas day. It’s a Tuesday, so probably a 4 mile tempo followed by a 35-45 minute run in the evening, depending on how much turkey I’ve eaten!

Martyn Rooney @MartynRooney
This year I’ve got a light day planned, an abs circuit, mobility circuit and a short easy jog.

Perri Shakes-Drayton @Shakesdrayton
I’ll have an early morning 20 minute run to do before I get busy in the kitchen!
