Steven Way secured himself a spot at No.5 on the UK all-time list for 100km with his 6:40:14 clocking for victory at the Stockholm Ultra Marathon on Sunday.

It was the first time the Bournemouth AC runner had taken on the distance and his dominance saw him lead from start to finish, maintaining incredible consistency to finish 44 minutes clear of the rest of the field and take 13 minutes off Spanish runner Asier Cuevas’ previous world leading time in the process.

“What a beautiful course,” commented Way after the race, “it was the perfect spot for my debut.

“I had to fight for it on the last lap. But one hour’s pain is nothing compared to three months of hard training.”

Despite the hot conditions, Way passed the marathon mark in 2:46:19 and 50K in 3:17.10. Although his speed slowed during the last ten miles, the 39-year-old had built enough of a lead to finish well clear of second placed Linus Holmsäter of Sweden (7:24:18) and Finland’s Fritjof Fagerlund (7:29:01).

It was a Swedish one-two-three in the women’s race, with Kajsa Berg crossing the line in 7:40:49 for the win ahead of Frida Södermark (8:08:43) and Petra Skiöld (8:28:04).
