Double European Cross Country champion finishes behind Ethiopian Ruti Aga at IRIS Lotto CrossCup
Ireland’s Fionnuala Britton continued her fine form with second place at the IRIS Lotto CrossCup meeting in Belgium earlier today.
The double European Cross Country champion (pictured in Hungary above) finished behind Ethiopian Ruti Aga at the final IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting of the year, with 18-year-old Aga pushing the pace throughout.
Aga and Britton, who made history in Budapest two weeks ago when she became the first woman to retain the European Cross County title, distanced themselves easily from the chasing pack which included European under-23 champion Jessica Coulson and defending champion Caroline Chepkwony of Kenya.
Aga’s compatriot Elini Gebriwoth finished third while Coulson dropped back to 11th towards the end of the race.
A teenager took victory in the men’s race too, with 18-year old Gilbert Kirui first over the line. The Kenyan broke away from the leading group at the halfway stage, winning by nine seconds ahead of fellow Kenyan Alex Kibet and Eritrea’s Tsegay Tuemay who took third.
Britton will next be in action at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country on January 5, where she will be part of an intriguing battle against Coulson, Portugal’s Ana Dulce Felix and Netherlands’ Adrienne Herzog.
