The main contenders for the English National Cross Country at Alton Towers

Athletics Weekly lists its top tips for the senior titles at the English National Cross Country Championships at Alton Towers tomorrow.


Andy Vernon: defending champion has been struggling with a back injury since his disappointing European Cross Country Championships.

Steve Vernon: if his namesake is not on top form, the Northern Championships runner-up may have as good as chance as ever of winning his first National title. 

Tom Lancashire: GB international miler showed great strength when beating Steve Vernon on a tough course at the Northerns.

Andi Jones: two-time Northern champion.

Neilson Hall: Southern champion is in great form.

Phil Wicks: former World Cross winner ran 64:10 half-marathon in windy conditions last weekend.

James Walsh: won his fifth Midland title in seven years three weeks ago.


Louise Damen: Euro Cross trial winner.

Hatti Dean: top Brit at the Euro Cross and winner of this event two years ago.

Emma Pallant: European under-23 bronze medallist.

Steve Stockton: last year’s runner-up and silver medallist at recent BUCS Championships.

Liz Yelling: four-time winner.

Gemma Steel: Euro Cross representative sealed big win in Belgium last weekend.
