World 1500m champion to take on likes of Bekele brothers at Bupa event
Asbel Kiprop has been added to the men’s international short course line-up at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country.
The Kenyan world 1500m champion will face the likes of Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele and his younger brother Tariku as he looks to successfully defend his title in the Scottish capital on January 11.
It was back in 2012 that Kiprop claimed a comfortable victory in Edinburgh and the former Olympic champion will be looking for more of the same as he also takes on the likes of Britain’s Chris Thompson, former European 10,000m silver medallist, and European Junior 1500m champion Jake Wightman.
With Kiprop having been hospitalised following a car crash in November, the event’s elite athlete manager Peter Riley insisted the athlete will arrive in Scotland fully fit.
“Asbel lost control of his car on a bend before landing in a ditch after hitting a rock,” commented Riley. “But after hospital treatment for bruising, he had a short recuperation period and has been back in full time training for quite some time.”
Alongside the men’s 4km invitational, the team competition will include junior and senior athletes from the UK, Europe and the USA. You can find the British team listed here. The event also features a mass participation 5km – the Bupa Great Winter Run – which will see around 2500 runners tackle a multi-terrain course ahead of the elite races.
