A bit of covert training might be the order of the day, reveals the heptathlete, as she approaches the end of her post-season rest
Like many elite athletes at the moment, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson is on an end-of-season training break, but the Merseyside athlete admits she uses “secret jogs” to keep her sanity.
Until the end of September, Johnson-Thompson is recovering from her best-ever season, one which saw her finish fifth at the IAAF World Championships with a PB of 6449 points.
But she admits the easy post-season period can be both a blessing and a curse.
“For the first couple of weeks I’m happy to be off, but towards the end I start to go on secret jogs that I’m not allowed to do as I’m meant to be resting,” she confessed to AW.
If coach Mike Holmes finds out, he ought not be too hard on her after a year in which she has added nearly 200 points to her PB. In her first year as a senior, she won the European under-23 title and missed out on a Worlds medal by just 28 points as she set four PBs in Moscow.
However, she has high hopes for 2014, too, and she adds: “I’ll enjoy my time off as it’s going to be a long season.”
Indeed, in 2014 the 20-year-old hopes to contest the World Indoor Championships pentathlon, Commonwealth Games heptathlon and European Championships long jump.
“I think a Commonwealth medal is a realistic aim for me,” she said of her hopes for next year.
