Olympic finalists form part of seven-strong GB & NI team set for Castellon, Spain
Sophie Hitchon and Alex Smith will lead a team of seven GB & NI athletes at the European Cup Winter Throws in Castellon, Spain, on March 16-17.
British record holder Hitchon, who finished 12th in the hammer at the London 2012 Olympic Games, is joined in the women’s event by 2009 European Under-23 bronze medallist Sarah Holt, while Smith, who also finished 12th in London last summer, will compete alongside 2010 Commonwealth Games representative Mark Dry.
Hitchon, who recently switched coaches to team up with Tore Gustafsson, the coach of Dry and Holt, opened her 2013 campaign at the beginning of March with a 70.34m throw at the British Athletics Winter Throws Trials in Loughborough, while Smith started his season with 70.93m.
Rachel Wallader, gold medallist at last month’s British Athletics European Trials & UK Championships, will compete in the women’s shot put alongside reigning World Youth silver medallist Sophie McKinna who set a meeting record of 15.90m at the England Athletics Age-Group Indoor Championships in February.
