Second wave of selections for the European Under-23 Championships in Tampere announced as injury rules out Holly Bleasdale

European under-23 400m hurdles champion Jack Green is among athletes named in the second wave of selections for the European Under-23 Championships in Tampere.

The 21-year-old will join the likes of London 2012 Olympians Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Adam Gemili, both named in the first wave of selections, in Finland for the competition from July 11-14.

Green ran a time of 49.13 to claim victory in Ostrava two years ago and will be joined in the event by Niall Flannery and Sebastian Rodger who are ranked third and fourth respectively in Europe.

The GB & NI team contains the top three ranked European male 200m runners as Gemili is joined by Danny Talbot and David Bolarinwa over the half-lap while the top two ranked athletes in the men’s 5000m are also British. Following his time of 13:46.62 at the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham on Sunday, Tom Farrell will join Luke Caldwell who leads the way with his time of 13:29.94 from April.

Rachel Johncock joins Jodie Williams in contesting the shorter sprint, with 19-year-old Williams set to double up in the 100m and 200m as well as leading the GB & NI 4x100m team.

Bianca Williams and Ashleigh Nelson will line-up with Williams, who is ranked fifth in Europe for 100m and third for 200m, in the longer of the two sprints.

British senior record holder Sophie Hitchon, who is almost two metres clear at the top of the European under-23 women’s rankings, will enter the competition as one of the strongest favourites, while British pole vault record holder Holly Bleasdale has been forced to withdraw from the competition through injury. Although the 21-year-old competed at the European Team Championships earlier this month she failed on her opening height of 4.25m and also missed last weekend’s Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham.

“I am now looking forward to getting my body injury free in time for the World Championships in Moscow,” commented the European indoor pole vault champion.
