Partnership aims to promote running in the capital as City of London Mile is confirmed as one of London Athletics’ approved events
Londoners are being encouraged to sign up for the City of London Mile as the event has partnered with England Athletics region London Athletics to help promote running in the capital.
Held for the first time in the year which marks 60 years since Sir Roger Bannister ran the world’s first sub-four-minute mile, the City of London Mile comprises five events: the Family Mile, Youth Mile, Corporate Mile, International Mile and the City of London Mile which is open to everyone.
Now confirmed as one of London Athletics’ approved events, the City of London Mile, to be held on June 22, will cover a one mile course following a historic route taking in Mansion House, the Bank of England, Guildhall and St Mary-le-Bow Church, as well as part of the London Olympic marathon course.
“A lot of planning and hard work has gone into this event, which will be capturing the imagination of a varied range of participants from families to elite runners, youngsters, corporates and ordinary Londoners, all wanting the chance to run fast around some of the city’s great sights,” commented England Athletics’ area manager for London Athletics, Bob Smith.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the sport to get people involved in athletics and we will be working with the event organisers to ensure people can make the most of it.”
World silver medallist Hannah England, pictured above, is among the supporters of the event, which starts and finishes next to St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of London’s Square Mile.
Entry is now open, with fees to the City of London Mile £15 for adults and £10 for children and runners of the Youth Mile (up to the age of 17). A family entry for one adult and one child costs £22, while a team of four from the same company can enter the Corporate Mile for £56. All club athletes registered with England Athletics receive a £2 discount, with a medal and goody bag on offer for all finishers.
