Alex Wright has said he is ‘absolutely thrilled’ to have been added to the GB team for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in just under a months’ time.

Having been missed off the original selection list announced on Tuesday, Wright, who set a UK 5000m walk record at the Sainsbury’s British Championships and was almost a minute inside of the 20km ‘A’ qualifying standard thanks to a 1:23.05 clocking in Lugano in March, lodged an appeal.

Despite holding the ‘A’ standard, UK Athletics said as there was not an official trial event for the discipline it had to be referred back to the performance director to reconsider.

“Upon reconsideration it was concluded that if last week’s Sainsbury’s British Championships 5km walk in which he set a new British Record had been classed as a trial race, then his subsequent victory as well as possession of the A standard would have led to automatic selection in round one of the selection process,” read a statement from UKA.

Upon being notified of the decision, Wright said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected to the GB & NI team for Moscow, and would like to thank Neil Black for reconsidering the initial decision.

“I am looking forward to heading out to for the British Athletics altitude camp in Font Romeau tomorrow and I look forward to putting in my best ever performance over the 20k distance for the team next month.”
