With a background in the sport, Christine Ohuruogu could lead a netball dream team of track and field stars, but who would make the squad?
A netball dream team of track and field stars… could the dream become a reality? Well hopes are certainly building that world 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu could join forces with fellow athletes like Donna Fraser and Kelly Sotherton to play a charity netball match.
Ohuruogu played netball for England under-17s before turning to sprinting, while Fraser has joined a local netball team to keep fit since retiring from athletics.
Athletics Weekly discovered Fraser’s new hobby at the British Athletics Writers’ Association Awards in London recently and it turns out the 6ft-plus tall four-time Olympian plays Goal Keeper for her side.
Fourth in the Olympic 400m final in 2000, Fraser played as a schoolgirl but athletics (she won six English Schools 200m titles!) took precedence.
Ohuruogu was also at the same awards to pick up her female athlete of the year prize and she told AW she used to play Goal Defence in her youth – reaching the lofty heights of the England under-17 team. The 2008 Olympic and double world 400m champion added that there are few better sports for teenage girls to do because of the speed, stamina and landing skills required.
In the past this magazine has put together a dream team of “athlete footballers”, including players such as Darren Campbell, Christian Malcolm and Dai Greene, but we have never listed a netball fantasy team. Until now …
» Goal Keeper – Donna Fraser
» Goal Defence – Christine Ohuruogu
» Wing Defence – Sophie Hitchon
» Centre – Goldie Sayers
» Wing Attack – Katharine Merry
» Goal Attack – Asha Philip
» Goal Shoot – Kelly Sotherton
The above athletes all have a background in netball, but competition to make this squad could be fierce, so if you know any more netball-playing athletes, tell us! Find us on Twitter @AthleticsWeekly, on Facebook at facebook.com/athleticsweekly or leave a comment beneath this post. Who would make it into your own netball dream team?
The original dream team above appeared in the November 28 issue of AW, which is available here or digitally here. Since publication we’ve also learned that triple jumper Chioma Matthews, a UK silver medallist in 2013, has won a Commonwealth netball medal for England. Matthews played wing attack, so there’s already competition for places!
A charity match is tailor-made for an end-of-season fun period. And, if it does happen, remember you read it here first!
